The Adaptive Sports & Recreation Program at the Sudbury Park & Recreation Department is committed to providing year round, affordable, community based programming for individuals with disabilities. The Adaptive Sports & Recreation Program offers a comprehensive and varied program of public recreation activities, services, as well as resources for residents. Recognizing the importance of recreation and leisure in the lives of all community members, the adaptive sports and recreation programs strives to improve the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through continued and successful involvement in sports and recreation programs.

SUDBURY SUMMER INCLUSION AIDE 
Position Purpose:
The Sudbury Summer Inclusion Program is looking for an experienced, patient, and knowledgeable individual to serve as the inclusion aide for campers with physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities. This Aide will assist in many ways including helping to bridge social gaps between children with and without disabilities, actively facilitating friendships and assuring successful participation in all camp activities. Additionally, this Aide and work with the Recreation Therapist, general summer staff, and parents to create child-specific success plans. This Aide will work with different campers on a daily basis depending on the activities and the level of assistance required.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
Mandatory attendance, Monday thru Friday, July 2 – August 17, 8:15am-3:30pm.
  • Proactive leader and member of inclusion team that ensures camp activities are accessible for all.
  • Work with children in a group and/or one-on-one setting. 
  • Implement and utilize positive behavioral plans when necessary.
  • Available to work with campers in the pool when necessary 
  • Anticipate situations and environments that may be anxiety provoking for campers and proactively implement stress reduction strategies to make the experience successful.
  • Consistently communicate with counselors, instructors, and parents regarding camper’s daily experiences.
  • Facilitate friendships between children with and without disabilities.
  • Act as a social role model for all children and staff at camp.
  • Responsible for utilizing visual schedules, communication boards, and child specific plans during all activities.
  • Enforce Sudbury Summer Camp rules, regulations, and policies to assure safety of all children in attendance.
  • Must be able to problem solve in the moment.
  • Comfortable interacting with parents at drop off and pick up daily.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity.
  • May be asked to review activity plans to assure accessibility for all campers.
Supervision:
This individual will work under the general supervision of the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Inclusion Camp Director.
 
Job Environment:
This summer program is jam packed with many different programs including science, art, swimming, sports, music, field trips, and other typical camp activities. Groups will be formulated of 10-20 kids and two staff. These environments require staff members to constantly be on the move and actively involved in all activities with campers. Individuals must be self-motivated and comfortable speaking and interacting with children with and without disabilities as well as their parents. On site days will be located at the Fairbank Community Center, 40 Fairbank Road, Sudbury, MA 01776. Off site locations are to be determined at a later date.
 
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
a. Education, Training and Experience
  • Experience working with children with disabilities a must.
  • Experience working at a summer camp a plus.
  • degree or enrollment in a degree program such as Recreation Therapy, Special Education, Social Work, or Early Childhood education a plus.
 
b. Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Moderate physical effort is generally required which involves occasional lifting/moving/pushing up to 30 pounds; may occasionally lift/move/push up to 60 pounds. Frequently required to spend 5+ hours standing and/or walking.
 
c. Additional Requirements
  • 19 years of age or older.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • CPR and first aid certification a plus.
  • Must be comfortable swimming.
